Evidence and Experiments!

So...it's been a while. I know. I suck.

BUT, to be fair, there hasn't been much going on. With Lori a student and me a writer...well, we don't exactly have money, and we've had trouble finding places to investigate that aren't private properties that charge. We've also had trouble finding time.

but THAT is about to end because I got a second job and spring break is coming up!

We have also been joined by a brilliant and awesome new member, Robin! She is a chemistry major, like Lori, and they're in many of the same classes. I'll let her introduce herself later though.

What I wanted to post about was this:

1) Over spring break, we are going back to the Talbott Inn. You know, where we had a flashlight, which was turned COMPLETELY off (none of that twisting the cap halfway between on and off cheater stuff) turn on and off by itself, without ever turning to the on position, in response to our questions? Well, we've fixed up our lightbulb experiment to be controlled and pretty and actually very useful to test out certain aspects of a spirit's composition.

Like how big is it? How far can it conduct electricity? CAN it conduct electricity? Can it produce its own power? How many volts can it produce?

All questions we intend to answer with this experiment, though we won't be able to answer them all in one night. We are super excited.

2) We have new evidence. For a test run before going to the Talbott again (because it costs money and as much as we love it, we can't afford to go every weekend), we took our set up to Patti's ghost hunter shop, the same place we got the cool video of the flying orb that turns into a head. And while we didn't get any interaction with our experiment, we did find a couple extremely clear EVPs while going through the audio afterward. Check them out.

In this one you'll hear Lori offer the recorder as an alternate means of communication, then Patti tells Chuck he forgot to turn the phone off, then you'll hear a voice. We think we know what it says, but what do you think??

Here it is again with the voice amplified.

We hear the name Jacob, but if you heard something different (or nothing at all) please leave us a message and tell us! After all, peer review is necessary to any good research.

The second EVP we got happened a little later. Patti was holding the recorder out over the table, where she tends to get most activity, asking spirits to "come through for us." She was also running a transmitter that picks up radio frequencies, but as you can hear, it had already been set up so that it was not hitting any radio stations. For the entire time it runs, there are no voices, music, or anything other than pure static. Then, while she is explaining what she's doing, the interference noises stop entirely and a very clear voice speaks over Patti's voice. We did not hear this voice with our natural ears.

I personally am not a fan at all of Spiritvox's "Ghost box" tool because it cycles through all the radio frequencies very rapidly, meaning it DOES pick up radio stations, and the chance of getting a few random words from radio stations that together sound like a message is just far too high for my taste. But this tool she was using was not the same thing. It didn't cycle through frequencies, but instead focused on one radio frequency that was not transmitting anything else. What do you hear it say? Listen right where Patti is saying "while we're doing this..."

We'd love feedback any and all the time, so leave us comments or send us a message with your thoughts!

Ever see something out of the corner of your eye, just for it to disappear?

So...I learned something interesting today.

Did you know that the corners of your eyes have more rods than the middle of your eyes?

Let me back up and explain. Our eyes have cells in them called Rods and Cones, named after their shape. Cones are better for color and day vision. Rods are better for night vision because they pick up light better than cones do. One rod can actually detect a single photon, though that never makes it to our conscious mind because the brain considers a single photon to be unimportant unless it is pitch black.

The interesting thing is that EVERYTHING we see is a reflection of light...so the rods being more sensitive to light actually makes them see better than the cones. And the majority of them are in the corners of our eyes.

What does that mean? Well, apparently our vision is actually better out of the corner of our eye than it is looking at something straight on. I first heard this on the Science channel today, and then did some follow up research to confirm it (because we all know how reliable tv is...). Back in the days of Madam Curie when scientists were discovering x-rays, gamma rays, and all the different forms of radiation, a French scientist was convinced he had found a type of radiation called an N-ray. He had these little metal rods that made a spark of energy between them, like a tiny bolt of lightning, to detect the radiation. When x-rays hit the spark, they cause it to brighten considerably. But after the experiment was over and he turned off the flow of x-rays, the scientist (Blondlot I think was his name) saw out of the corner of his eye that the spark was still brightening, but it couldn't be seen straight on...only out of the corner of the eye.

Now this was later found to not be true, his experiments were faulty. BUT, in the course of the show, they said that the corner of the eye actually does have better vision. To see something as clearly as possible, you should use your peripheral vision, because it is sharper than your regular vision.

So what's my point? Well...if the corner of our eye actually has BETTER vision, then why is it when someone sees something out of the corner of their eye, they usually just assume they imagined it? It is actually a fact that our vision is better out of the corner of our eye, so it makes sense that anything that just barely doesn't give off enough light to be seen looking straight on, CAN be seen by looking at it with your peripheral vision. Could this be an explanation as to why so many people who claim to see a "ghost" see it out of the corner of their eye?  If there is something giving off a little bit of light, but not enough to be picked up by the cones that make up our normal day vision, could it be that the corners of our eyes pick it up because they are all rods, not cones?
